A Simple Lenten Meal: Boiled Potatoes, Carrots, Egg, and Bread

Finding meaning in humble food and sacred simplicity this Lent

Today’s plate was simple—boiled potatoes, a couple of carrots, a hard-boiled egg, and a piece of bread. Nothing extravagant. No frills, no feast. Just enough.

And somehow, it felt like more than enough.

As we move through Lent here at Pine Mountain Farm, we’re reminded daily of the quiet beauty in simplicity. This season isn't about abundance—it's about intentionality, humility, and reflection. Meals like this one offer more than just physical nourishment. They offer space. Space to pause, to consider, and to give thanks.

There’s something deeply moving about a meal that echoes the way Jesus lived—simply, humbly, and with gratitude. He never sought excess. He didn’t need luxury. And yet, He gave everything He had—His time, His love, His very life.

A humble plate of boiled vegetables and bread might not seem like much in today’s world, but maybe that’s the point. In stripping things back, we find what really matters. The warmth of food shared, the comfort of silence, the feeling of being connected to something greater than ourselves.

Here on the Pine Mountain Farm, we’re surrounded by that kind of quiet strength every day—in the turning of the seasons, in the honest labor of the land, and in meals like this one. Simple. Sacred.

This Lent, may we lean into that simplicity. May our small sacrifices bring us closer to the One who gave everything. And may we never take for granted the blessing of “just enough.”

Farm Reflections:

Lent isn’t about grand gestures—it’s about small, honest ones. Meals like this connect us to the essentials: nourishment, gratitude, and quiet reflection.

As we boil our potatoes and slice our bread, we’re reminded of how Jesus lived—humbly, with intention, and always with love.

May this meal—simple as it is—be a soft place to land and a moment to reflect.
